A PS6 would probably have a much higher price tag than that considering that a PS5 pro already costs $950. If they made a PS6 right now with the previously rumored specs I wouldn't be suprised by a $1500 price tag.
I don't think a $1000 PS6 can succeed if it's going the traditional console route.
If they go with just the handheld plan, as the article speculates they may, they effectively take themselves out of competition with Microsoft and instead go all-in against Nintendo. There could be a niche for "Switch 2 with even better hardware," but I don't think they're going to be able to compete with Nintendo on price or IP. At best, they establish a DS/PSP market, where the DS dominates but the PSP has a reliable consumer base. At worst, they make another PS Vita (overpriced, consumer hostile), and watch as Nintendo pushes them out of the market again.
If they do the hybrid handheld/home console release as originally speculated, they set themselves up like Microsoft at the beginning of this generation having to support two tiers of hardware. And if they, like Microsoft, mandate feature parity to make the weaker console not feel neglected, they'll end up shooting themselves in the foot when third-party releases opt not to publish with Sony if they have a hard time supporting the weaker system. And it's not as though that strategy worked for Microsoft this generation either, as they are still selling fewer Xbox consoles than ever, so having a lower cost of entry system didn't really seem to help.
And if their home console is just a $1000 discless PS5 Pro or marginally stronger, I think it's DOA. At that price point, you may as well buy a Steam machine, or just a gaming PC in general, and take advantage of the open ecosystem.
I'd say the same thing about rumors surrounding the comparable $1000 Xbox as well (Project Helix) but if those rumors are to be believed, its saving grace is that it's basically just aiming to be the Windows version of a Steam Machine (prebuilt PC in console form that will let you install games from other markets). Microsoft is desperate enough to do that, Sony is too prideful to do that, but it would make Microsoft's console more appealing than Sony's console if you already have a massive Steam library (and don't want a Steam machine for whatever reason).
