Don't worry everybody, they're only spying on the evil foreigners. Anthropic is a very wholesome company with very serious Red Lines about spying on the good American people.

TLDR it was aimed at detecting / blocking competing AI companies trying to copy their model. Ironic given the provenance of most training data, but not entirely malware per se.
