Inflation happens when new money are printed. As there's more money, each individual cent can buy less real goods. What than could be bought for 50¢, now costs $7.
I once sawheard a 4wD crash right on the neighbors' solid brick wall, right across the street. The cops were chasing the car, which was stolen, and arrested the driver. My 16y/o chicken self got so scared with all the noise that I didn't dare to peek through the window for a good ten minutes. When I finally did, I thought the hole in the wall looked surreal. The impact also damaged the garage door. I can't even begin to imagine the insurance shitshow that must have been.
Yeah, i figured as much. I don't even have a drivers licence, so that's a other people problem for me at least. Public transport in Vienna, Austria is fucking awesome.

Accounting for inflation, that's $7 in today's money

Ehrm how?
Inflation would make the money worth less. So for it to be the same worth you need more money.
Maybe 7$ at this time is now 50$?
Or did I miss a joke?

Change that sign to say $50 and it fits right in to modernity.

50c for the damage on the house? i'd take that deal.

If you parked in a paid lot, but you caused damage while parking, that wouldn't be covered by your parking fee.
