Gruel from 1804. The brandy gave a nice fruity aroma

I swear I'm not an alcoholic

Hehe of course the alcohol boils off.

One step closer to the source: https://www.tastinghistory.com/recipes/gruel and a video.

The original recipe seems a bit posh - or, as the book cover says, for the "Nobleman, gentleman and tradesman".

But the combo of brandy, butter, (cane) sugar and nutmeg sounds really nice.

BTW I wonder if oatmeal originally refered to rolled oats or coarse flour.

It's definitely the best oatmeal I've tasted. I was sceptical, but it worked out very well. I've actually been wanting to make it again, haha

It looks like for the old recipe the brandy was only boiled for the last 5 minutes compared to the modern recipe. What did you do?

I'm sure the alcohol boils off from both. But brandy gives a great taste when cooking

I let it boil for about 20 more minutes after adding the flavourings. But after that, I changed the recipe to add the brandy earlier, so it gets more time to boil off. I'll try it that way next time
