There is a lot happening in those faults lately. I'm worried it's started a chain reaction around the larger "Caribbean" area. Venezuela, Antilles had some shakes, and Mexico now.
It was bound to happen all along the Ring of Fire. California's due to have a magnitude 7+ earthquake for some time now. From what I recall there's a lot of pent up stress between tectonic plates just waiting for a release.
To add on top of this, we're also in the middle of a pole shift. That weakens the magnetic shield of Earth, which allows for more energy from the Sun to be dumped into the planet. The effects of this are, in part, more active volcanoes and shifting tectonic plates.

There seem to be quite a few large earthquakes this year.
Am I seeing it more in the news lately or is it really happening at a higher frequency?

i've been keeping my eyes on the sudden solar (flare) activity . Seems there is a correlation due to the heat, radiation etc, and tectonic activity.
