I expect this is it, just cover to justify what they want to do or think they might want to do. And it's not like they have to trick most people, or even anyone really, so long as it satisfies the desire to have some kind of fig leaf to post-hoc rationalize what they're doing. A lot (most?) of the audience probably knows that it is a lie but is too cynically self-interested to think it's a problem; ethics are for betas and cucks after all.

Edit: I remember seeing a clip a couple weeks ago where they were interviewing MAGAts, asking them where the line is for them with Trump, the point at which they could no longer support him no matter what. And one guy said, "If he violates the Constitution." The interviewer asked him to give an example of something that might violate the Constitution and the guy immediately said, "Seek a third term." Given the way alt-right media programs MAGAts, I wonder how much longer he'll maintain that opinion, especially with "authority figures" saying that Obama already did it.
The only people who believe it are just looking for a reason. Being a stupid reason works for them, because it pisses off their opposition for caring about reality.
They see it as a double win: no need to think about it, and the people they hate are upset.
