Shishi beats Kinbozan, to stay in the leaderpack! Turns out Shishi didn't just fold like laundry after he lost yesterday. ofc Kinbozan is Maegashira 14 i.e. lowest tier in Makuuchi, but still, Shishi showed good maneuverability and balance before finally resorting to the ol' reliable "shove the guy out by sheer force of strength."

! NOKOTTA ! NOKOTTA ! NOKOTTA !

Takerufuji beaten by Mitakeumi - Takerufuji's in the leaderpack. Mitakeumi's ZERO and seven. Done deal, right? WRONG! Don't take ANYONE in Makuuchi for granted! After a solid clash and a bit of back-and-forth pushing, Mitakeumi gets the better of Takerufuji and shoves him out the ring!

Fujiryoga beaten by Shodai - Fujiryoga gets pushed back! He ALMOST touches the ground! Fujiryoga in a one-foot balancing act shown above!! And yet he recovers and shoves back from the edge! But then Shodai do-si-do's him around the doyho and SWINGS him out into the audience! Not the best sumo match of yesterday, but an entertaining display of fighting for balance.

Ura beats Takayasu! Two of my fave wrestlers! I had to pause and think deeply about who I was gonna cheer for. Eventually I settled on: "good match, no injuries!" And indeed it turned out that way, Ura stayed lowed and gradually pushed Big Poppa backwards and out. Feelz bad for Poppa no longer in the leaderpack, but feelz good for Ura chipping away at that losing streak.

Yoshinofuji beats Fujinokawa - after a bit of grappling, Fujinokawa tries a trip that goes nowhere. Then Yoshinofuji SLIDES Fujinokawa halfway cross the ring before throwing him down!

Aonishiki beats Takanosho! Takanosho defends like a warrior, keeping Aonishiki at arm's length, then controlling his left hand, then shoving him down to the ground! Unfortunately for him, Takanosho went a lil too far back and stepped out of the ring! So Aonishiki wins but it's a pyrrhic victory - he was a little slow to get up!!?! Did he exacerbate his injury? Let's hope for the best!

Kirishima beats Atamifuji! Atamifuji pushes Kirishima back, but Kirishima recovers and manages to shove Atamifuji backwards and out!

! NOKOTTA ! NOKOTTA ! NOKOTTA !

Hoshoryu defeats Daieisho, establishing a firm grip and guiding him to the right and out!

! NOKOTTA ! NOKOTTA ! NOKOTTA !

Onosato defeats Oho the way he does best -- just bulldoze him backwards relentlessly!

What did you think? Ura vs Takayasu: who to cheer for?!?

I became a Ura fan but i was cheering for both. It's one of those matches when you see them face to face in the "ring", you know that it's going to be interesting.

Kirishima beats Atamifuji! Atamifuji pushes Kirishima back, but Kirishima recovers and manages to shove Atamifuji backwards and out!

A* took his time there at the beginning, K* waiting patiently for him to take his position.

What was K*'s stare at the end for? Generally he is amicable, not this time.

So Aonishiki wins but it's a pyrrhic victory - he was a little slow to get up!!?! Did he exacerbate his injury? Let's hope for the best!

i thought that even his fall was from his injury. In slow motion we see that his left ankle (?) gives up or he somehow reacts to pain and without support, falls.

What was K*’s stare at the end for?

idk for sure. Here's some speculation:

at the start of the match, Atamifuji likes do do this thing where he dangles his arms waiting for the other person to put his fists down, then Atamifuji does a quick motion down and charges, thus getting a bit of an advantage. But this time Kirishima refused to let him do it - Kirishima stayed standing until Atamifuji crouched down, and make sure Atamifuji had at least one hand on the ground (and the other almost-touching). Then at the end of the match, it kinda looked like Atamifuji was shoving Kirishima's head down even after the match was clearly over - you can see the end of it in the picture above, Atamifuji had just kinda whipped Kirishima's head down with his right hand. (it might have caught the hair too, which is against the rules - it's hard to tell.)

Speculation: it's possible that Atamifuji's end-of-match shove-down was related to his displeasure at the start-of-match standoff, and Kirishima stare meant: don't mess with me. FWIW if Kirishima was REALLY a bad guy he coulda just kept shoving Atamifuji off the dohyo, but he didn't - so I gotta say I side with Kirishima on this one. But this is all speculation.

Are other rikishi going easy on him?

I don't think so. I think Onosato's just so good that he makes it look easy. I think Onosato does grabbing and blocking things that are hard to see because they happen in the chest-to-chest region, but are vital to getting leverage, blocking his opponent, and putting them off-balance. Right after he hurt his shoulder it was probably harder for him to do those actions, but it seems to be getting better.

was it the right shoulder he hurt? Lately he uses his left arm and the whole body to substitute for, i think, to stay in the game

A losing record in March, followed by an absence in May due to a left ankle issue, sent Aonishiki down to sekiwake, but he can secure an immediate return to ozeki by winning 10 or more bouts this month.

Someone in the tachiai.org comments said about Aonishiki:

„the nail on his left big toe had lifted and was bleeding. However, the nail was not completely detached, and his walk appeared stable“ (Nikkan Sports)

Thanks for the explanations on the Kirishima v Atamifugi fight! That was really helpful and added a lot to rewatching it.

I was sure Takanosho beat Aonishiki. I must not have been watching closely enough. Now I have an excuse to watch a different highlights reel of the same day.

I thought so too. I thought Dondon MUSTA messed up but I confirmed with sumodb and looked closer and saw that Tanaosho stepped out. Too bad for him, he did a great job controlling Aonishiki, I think he just lost track of where he was in the ring.
