very inefficiently i guess. air has larger resistance than cable so it heats up a lot when current flows through it, which is why it's glowing hot plasma in the first place. (also the plasma is what makes the air slightly more conductive)

I've been around 500 kV when I worked on industrial solar farms.

I only worked on the "low voltage" inverters, which took 1000V DC and converted to 1500V AC. Then it went into the medium voltage 34 kV transformer attached to it, I only worked on that a few times when traveling. From there it went to the grid distribution which was 500 kV
