This is a bizarre story for someone in the UK where the date that counts is the ‘Registration Date’ and cars sit in dealer showrooms and lots for many months (maybe years). We often only find out about build dates when we need parts and have the conversation about “well this car was registered in 2020 but it was built in 2018”

I'm in USA and don't get it either. People were driving these cars completely happy until they were told it was made a few months earlier than they thought. They weren't complaining.
I know there's details that people will nitpick though.

Could there be a different interpretation of factory warranties somewhere?
But hey, if complaining yields a sizable discount, it might be worth the effort for no other reason than that.

I know I’ve started this but I can see the point, it’s really difficult in the UK to get answers about the exact features of a car and when they were introduced from dealers, and I think that’s partly because of the ‘old stock’ issue.
No dealer wants to admit they are selling a car that has been hanging around for months, virtually every conversation starts with “we just got this one in” if it’s true or not.
I recently was trying to work out if 2024-2026 Kia EV6s had wireless CarPlay, it was impossible work out because of the registration vs. manufacturing date.

Could it be that in a fast moving technology likr EV that there are actual new features yo be gained within a year? I imagine that with ice it is not th e case but for ev it seems at least possible. But if its the same model, probably not. And a sitting battery doesn't go bad either.

In Ireland we register the cars but they are registered somehow rlating to their original date.
Like if you had a twincam for forty years and registered it it wouldsomehow be a 1986.
If you import it is tied to origin registration.
We also show which half of the year so keeping up with the jonses is huge.
