Ex-Valve writer Chet Faliszek says gamers made the choice for digital, and now they're crying about discs disappearing 😑
He points out that physical copies are still available, but people barely buy them. Services like Game Pass were digital from day one. His take: if you wanted to keep discs, you should've stopped buying digital games and ditched subscriptions back then. Now it's PRACTICALLY TOO LATE to reverse it

I don't think gamers are crying about disks specifically. They want to be able to own their games and have them available for the long term. However companies like Sony and Nintendo have shown that they will eventually shut down e-stores or revoke licenses.
Digital media is far more convenient, and there is no reason you shouldn't be able to transfer your licenses and keep your purchases long term, especially when paying the same price as physical.

I don't think this is it. Nobody really expects (or should expect) that from Steam or any of the other big PC stores. "Ownership" is something that 99% of people don't care about.
What matters is value, and the fact that there is none of it in console gaming today and that even the option of physical games at all (that most people didn't even take) was a surrogate for a good quality/value that reminded people of when a $60 purchase felt like a $60 purchase (The Order 1886 notwithstanding)
I don't expect my Steam purchases to be around forever and that it doesn't take like 6 angry Australians to nuke half my library again, but I also don't really care because those games are like $4 and give me hours of fun. PS and Nintendo have really no competition against that.

Chet blames us for system of short term convenience structured on the reduction of costs for the industry. We were sold this imperfect system. The industry architected it as is, where we never own anything. Yeah blame us for complaining about the loss of ownership, Chet. 🖕
