PieFed is 3 years old today

The first commit to the git repository was this day in 2023.

What a ride, how time flies, etc.

So many people have helped and contributed, in big and small ways. Code, translations, ideas, testing, feedback, writing docs, running instances - PieFed wouldn't be what it is without you all!

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey so far! Onwards to the next chapter!

Yay! Thank you for your effort the past 3 years. You've made piefed a mature and feature-rich piece of software.

Great job

I must thank you for making the biggest Piefed server, Fedinsfw, possible. You have saved porn in the threadiverse.

tuckerm@feddit.online · 13 pts · 17d

Thank you for everything that you've done! This is an incredibly featureful and mature application, I had assumed it must be more than three years old.

What's the next chapter? 🙂

rimu@piefed.social · 40 pts · 17d (14 replies)

In the latest release I've started to go down a path towards proper Mastodon integration. So I'm looking to bust out of the threadiverse and be able to discard my Mastodon account because PieFed will be just as good at showing me Mastodon toots as it is Lemmy posts.

There are 20x more Mastodon users than threadiverse users so this could be a step-change for the project.

Eventually this ends with PieFed fulfilling the promise that the fediverse has for so long never really lived up to - that you can use one platform and access all the content from all the other platforms. But that might be the chapter after next.

I'll be intregued to see how the mastodon integration wirks from a user perspective. Will it be integrated into the same view, or will it be a separate view? Will we be able to follow individual users, or tags? I look forward to finding out.

rimu@piefed.social · 11 pts · 17d

I'm going to try putting it into the same view and see how it goes. It might be that the amount of votes Lemmy posts get vs the number of likes Mastodon posts get is so different that the ranking system that Hot/Scaled uses doesn't make sense... Only one way to find out!

dumples@piefed.social · 5 pts · 17d

I used Kbin.social (RIP) for a while and loved the mastodon integration. A good update for sure

victorz@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 17d (10 replies)

Cool stuff! And you'll be able to post to Mastodon add well, or just see content from it? 🙂

rimu@piefed.social · 8 pts · 17d (3 replies)

Yeah, both!

Any time you post in a community all your Mastodon followers already receive your post and can comment on it.

victorz@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 17d (2 replies)

So you login with your Mastodon account first somehow, in order to integrate?

rimu@piefed.social · 3 pts · 17d (1 reply)

No, you'd export a CSV of who you follow out of Mastodon, and then upload that into PieFed. Your PieFed account will then follow all the same people you were following on Mastodon.

One day it'd be nice to support Mastdon's account migration functionality so you can do a proper move which automatically gets all your old followers to follow your PieFed account but that's a long way off.

victorz@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 16d

Cool! Thanks for taking the time to explain!

Die4Ever@retrolemmy.com · 4 pts · 17d (5 replies)

technically you're already posting to Mastodon, Mastodon can already follow Lemmy/PieFed users and communities

I mean, okay, but it's a limited experience compared to direct Mastodon-Mastodon interaction, right? In terms of messaging and mentions? Or?

Die4ever@mastodon.gamedev.place · 1 pts · 17d (3 replies)

@victorz hello from Mastodon, replies seem to work fine

victorz@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 17d (2 replies)

I don't know how you just did that sorcery if you really did it, but I mean the other way, like if I have a PieFed account on some instance, would I be able to discuss stuff on some Mastodon thread, under a post created on Mastodon? Follow Mastodon accounts, and such?

Die4ever@mastodon.gamedev.place · 1 pts · 17d

@victorz I did it by pasting your comment's url into my Mastodon search bar.

The stuff you're saying seems to not work well in PieFed YET (unless the Mastodon user tagged a community like @communityname@instancename), but it's in progress. You can't yet search for Mastodon users in PieFed, but if you find them you can click on them and follow them from there.

Mbin can already do it all.

And thank you VERY MUCH for creating something so awesome! I love using it.

MousePotatoDoesStuff@piefed.social · 6 pts · 17d (3 replies)

PieFed and Lemmy are much younger than I thought they were.

Happy birthday, PieFed! :D 🥧

can@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 17d (2 replies)

Lemmy is 7 years old.

MousePotatoDoesStuff@piefed.social · 3 pts · 16d (1 reply)

Yea, and this is still younger than I thought it would be. Idk how old exactly I thought it would be, but it's more than 7.

can@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 16d

Understandable, when I joined I was surprised to see accounts that were 4 years old since the vast majority of us had just registered.

bad1080@piefed.social · 5 pts · 17d

happy birthday!

dumples@piefed.social · 5 pts · 17d

Congratulations!!! What a milestone

cloudless@piefed.social · 5 pts · 17d

Thank you for creating and keep improving this amazing piece of software. It takes tremendous dedication to follow through what you started.

manxu@piefed.social · 5 pts · 17d

Congrats, @rimu@piefed.social you are my open source hero! Clean code base, performant application, and endless customization. Thank you!!! ❤️

HubertManne@piefed.social · 3 pts · 17d

wow. I looked at my user and it only says a year since I joined. feels like forever since I was on kbin. you really got something that is much closer to what, I at least, wanted. And, of course, while looking at my user I see some new stuff (to me) :)

thenexusofprivacy@piefed.social · 3 pts · 17d

Happy birthday -- and thanks to everybody involved, really great progress over the last three years, looking forward to the next chapter!

Blaze@piefed.zip · 2 pts · 16d

Happy birthday, Piefed!

PsyQ@social.vivaldi.net · 2 pts · 16d

@rimu Congrats, I've been digging into the threadivsere again and enjoying it a lot via PieFed.

Easy to find the stuff I want, easy to filter out stuff that I don't want from inside stuff that I do want, I couldn't ask for more but I'm curious about the tighter fediverse integration.

gmc@snac.chasmcity.net · 2 pts · 16d (1 reply)

Pardon my ignorance, but what is piefed? I went to the site but became none the wiser.

It's a software comparable to Lemmy and Mbin
