Last few weeks I have become increasingly concerned over the political climate in the US. I have been thinking about how better to arm myself. I even traded away a gun that I never use in a weird caliber for something I will carry. A couple years ago I bought an AR and I can't stand those things I bought one just for this. And I'm sure some of you will make a comment about me hating AR's but being ex-military and enjoying guns I just did not enjoy owning an AR it wasn't the type of gun that I wanted to. But here we are.
I have bought plenty of 9 mm and 556 because that's primarily the guns that I own I don't think I need anymore 45/70. I've thought about getting a more inconspicuous rifle to carry. I mean around where I live there's a very big hunting culture and nobody would look sideways at me having a bolt action rifle in my truck but they might look sideways at me if I have a tricked out AR. They probably wouldn't but you know I'm starting to get a certain level of paranoia that I actually hate having.
Anyway long story short I'm just wondering how all of you are feeling and what you're doing to prepare if you're doing anything.

I'm ex-military, too. I've done enough shooting to last several lifetimes and I've just never felt the need to own any weapons. If I was really worried about being shot at I would carry around a blowout kit.
That being said I've taken additional steps to prepare for anything because shit feels real crazy and I'd rather not find myself in a situation of my own making.

Yeah carrying first aid is a good idea. I do keep a kit in my truck and in my backpack. Truthfully I don't think being an old white guy in Western North Carolina that I'm going to be in much trouble. Maybe if they look at some of the stickers on my truck I might be but with that said during the hurricane in the lake lure area there were people loaded up in trucks with guns going around hunting let me emphasize hunting for FEMA employees because they had heard that FEMA was forcing people to sign over their land to get hurricane help. None of that was true it was all propagated in the fucking right-wing blog as fear incel bullshit. So you know I don't know what's going to happen when enough idiots get together in critical mass. I have Tim Moore as my congressman fucking shit stain if I ever saw one. To the north of me is Virginia Fox and to the west of me is Chuck Edwards. All three of these fuck nuggets are maga. So with that in mind realize that the vast majority of Western North Carolina outside of Asheville or Boone are foaming at the mouth cultist. And the ones that aren't could care less about actual voting and securing their rights. So I guess I don't know man I really don't know.

Practicing, building community and improving resilience and sustainability.
Growing food, improving my health and well being, connecting with my neighbors and helping them as often as able, regardless of their politics.
This year I saw a need in my region for leftists, counter-cultural and minority people to have a safe space where they can learn, share and collaborate centered around firearms and preparedness. So I built it.
I communicate and connect with others and if they have the interest I bring them into the circle.

Kel-tec sub 2000 is a solid gun to look into. Low cost, folds in half, threaded barrel for a suppressor, takes glock magazines so you can get a 50 round drum, and it takes 9mm. Fits in a back pack when folded.

Yeah I'm kind of looked at a sub 2000 again I had a Gen 1 that was Beretta because at the time I had a Beretta M9 pistol. I traded away the pistol and a few months ago I gave the The sub 2002 a lesbian couple. I've looked at the Ruger PC charger thought that was a neat little gun I've even thought about getting one of those pistol chassis things for my PSA dagger. I was looking at the Ruger American ranch in 556 and the Mossberg MVP in 556. I have lever guns in 357 Magnum and revolvers and 357 Magnum and a couple of pistols in 9 mm. And of course a few 22 just to shoot for fun. I have a Hi-Point that I inherited from a dead friend. It's a nice car being but god damn that thing's heavy.

I don't think carrying is the answer. Guns alone do not give you political power. And keeping a rifle visible in your truck feels more like a theft liability than a benefit, IMO.
As others said, put your energy into disaster training, building up your community, local political activism, etc. We need community engagement, support structures in place, and local politics on our side.
The AR platform is objectively a good one, but I don't like them, either. They are part of the whole paramilitary cosplay bullshit that is now pervasive in the shooting world.
