It's just so fucked up majority of the country thinks these people are lying. I used to work in immigration law, it's a lot of time money and sheer effort people have to put in to get asylum/refugee status. They're not making it up, they're fleeing these countries like Guatemala and coming here because they get real death threats, for refusing to join gangs and/or bribe local officials.
It's not a joke, it's not a scam, and we are sending these people home to get murdered.
