"After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the border zone that divided West and East Germany <...> the nearly 1,400-kilometer (870 miles) stretch, once known as the death strip, is a "green belt."

It's home to around 7,500 species of insects and spiders, hundreds of them endangered, as well as otters, wildcats and birds on the brink of extinction."

There's a movie with Tilda Swinton riding her bike along the route of the Berlin wall. Looked very walkable

Cycling the Frame

In 1988, Tilda Swinton toured round the Berlin Wall on a bicycle - starting and ending at the Brandenburg Gate - accompanied by filmmaker Cynthia Beatt. As Swinton travels through fields and historic neighborhoods, past lakes and massive concrete apartment buildings, the Wall is a constant presence.

I will have to give it a looksie. I imagine a lot has changed since then though.
