Does upvoting a Pixelfed post create a like on the Pixelfed post? And what does downvoting do?

I've very much been enjoying following Pixelfed accounts from Piefed, but I'm not sure if I should be spending some of my limited daily allocation of votes on Pixelfed posts, or if I should save them for Piefed and Lemmy posts. If I upvote them, does the Pixelfed post show a like from the Pixelfed side? Does downvoting even do anything?
