I know some African countries are completely misguided, and think Russia is better than Europe in a "the enemy of my enemy" kind of way. Problem is that Russia is way worse, Europe has moved away from our immoral past more than most.

I think this has to do with the Soviet Union back in the day that supported basically all the liberation struggles. Technically Ukraine then also supported the liberation struggles because you were part of the Soviet Union. But I know Russia has basically slipped in and claimed all the credentials for themselves.
