I legitimately hate how "we'll have a dog get hurt" is the go to move now.
Really I hate any "go to" move. These movies all move on such slow timelines due to cgi, that any idea that fresh when it's filmed (let alone written) is going to be massively overdone by the time it's released.
So even if it's timely when written, by the time we see it we're over it.
Like, "don't fuck with the dog" worked in John Wick, because it was fresh. It was a new plot point that virtually everyone identified with.
But that came out 12 years ago, we've had a decade of watching an anti-hero's dog being hurt turning them into a hero we can identify with. It just comes across as lazy now.
And most of the time it's a big red flag that the rest of the writing was lazy too.
I wouldn't go as far to say Supergirl was a bad movie, but it was very lazy writing and had no substance. Alcock and Momoa are just really good actors, that's the only thing that kept it from being a bad movie.
That whole movie was adapted off of the Woman of Tomorrow comic from 2022. Krypto’s poisoning was a major plot point and Lobo was never in the story. Maybe they got the idea from Wick, I don’t know, but the movie was using that story and made quite a few changes.
