You're right, you couldn't be you. There's no reason or evidence at all to support the idea that one can be reborn.

I mean. It likely is. Like the rest of religious and supernatural mumbo jumbo. don't get me wrong I like buddhism as a philosophy but once you get into rebirth and all its pointless. As you point out if it is true it is not functionally different than dying and going no where anyone. If your ego and memories die. you die.

There is no “real” answer to your question, its philosophical and we can at most find a potential truth but may never know the truth.

Disclaimer out of the way i will take you on a small (summarised) story, of an idea i have thought lots about.

The human brain is composed of 2 sub parts as most people know. Each part is just bundles of neurons but different bundles of neurons have specialised in different functions, From this set of brain function to left or right brain is constructed and then from the combined total of that left and right brain it emerges into a human/mamal mind.

While one mind, the sides can operate individually, if the thin connection between then is lost. This important for the pattern, it also possible demonstrates how a half can be conscious on its own. So your current conciousness is actualy 2 conciousness working in tanden. At least.

Modern research has suggested each brain side is actually also composed of 2 parts themselves.

So 1 human mind emerges from 2 (conscious?) brainbits, which on their own emerge from 2 (concious?) brainbits, who on their own emerge from bundles of neurons that perform individual functions.

This is the pattern… But in reverse.

My argument about brains was rooted in science till now. The pattern will remain but from here on its pure philosophy.

Why would the pattern stop. If my mind is emergent of half minds emergent to even smaller minds. Then i am part of the chain of complexity. If i work together with other bright people and organise that i too become part of a greater complexity. Just like my brainlobes are for me.

So could there not already be a higher entity Somewhere that is as complex to us as entire humanity is to a single brain cell. Where our developed minds ARE the brain cells.

An adjacent story.

If i was “god” and there was nothing around, what would i do? I guess at some point i would split myself into 2 and then from interaction between us things that are more interesting then nothing can be created.

Till we are bored then we split again.. and split again.. split again.. its division an smaller echo of a all knowing singularity. I have a theory i call the maximalisation of reality. More interactions means more complexity, more potential, more stuff.

Put these stories together and you can Imagine a model. Where you and some of the people you frequently deal with are actually all the same higher level one, which i guess we could call an angel with understanding that its not a perfect consciousness itself. As this angel may togetherness with a few other angels make a higher level one..

So who are you actually?

If you are your brain lobes emerging into you.

Then the first level of higher consciousness is the humans it emerges from.

You where always you, but you where also always the people around you, and you where always all layers of higher consciousness.

The one level higher consciousness may grow and shrink in the human minds it emerges from (or do we emerge from it, idk) thats not different from the human mind where braincells die an grow every day.

You don't need to wait for rebirth as this pretty much already is the case.

You are not the same person you were five minutes ago, or five years ago. Your body has replaced countless cells, your memories have shifted, your preferences have changed and the pattern of activity in your brain is different. There is no fixed, unchanging core that stays identical from one moment to the next. What we call “you” is a continuously updating process, not a solid object that persists unchanged.

There is no single place behind your face where a self sits and watches. Experience (consciousness) arises from vast numbers of neurons interacting in particular patterns. The sense of being a unified “I” is just something the brain constructs. It feels solid from the inside, but it is a generated appearance rather than a central entity.

Lucky you, as far as anyone knows, it is.
