Can someone who understands UK politics explain to me how the election was between the guy everyone hates from Brexit and a trash bin... And how the trash bin didn't win?
So first part is Clacton-on-sea is a coastal town in the UK and as such has been economically depressed since the 1970s when the jet liner allowed package holidays and then low cost airlines like easyjet and Ryan Air for the working class to take cheap holidays in Spain, Portugal, etc. so the domestic sea side tourism industry collapsed.
Couple that with the fact that most of the young and bright leave these kind of places to head for bigger cities means all that's left is the old retirees and people who can't afford to move even if they wanted to. Hence a lot of older white people and therefore perfect place for racism and xenophobia to thrive.
That's why he got elected there in the first place.
Farage stood down as an MP because he was being investigated by an independent committee for accepting a £5million gift from a British crypto magnate living in Thailand and not declaring it when he was elected. Him not being an MP would mean the investigation ended.
He then ran for election again and tried to frame the whole thing as "Farage and the people VS the establishment". This was to put political pressure on the committee to not carry out their job because it would be seen as a political attempt to silence him.
So the major political parties in the UK, on both sides of the political spectrum, decided not to run candidates against him thereby denying the debate opportunity for Farage to push his narrative.
The only well known candidate to stand against Farage is the comedy candidate Count Binface which made what Farage trying to make into a serious fight about the "will of the people against the establishment" into a farce.
So he's now an MP again, the investigation will continue, and the only result out of this was a funny election and £100,000 of taxpayers money wasted because if he's found by the committee to have not followed proper procedure for declaring political gifts, which he almost certainly has, Farage will be excluded from Parliament for a good couple of months, which will trigger another by-election in which he cannot stand as a candidate.
