FM Penny Wong shuts down Australian National University joint venture with Chinese university over national security concerns

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has terminated a collaboration between the Australian National University and Shandong University.

Wong told ANU it must shut down its Joint Science College by January next year.

She has the power under the Foreign Relations Act to cancel arrangements with foreign entities that are inconsistent with Australian foreign policy.

ANU said it would comply with the direction.

The context: The university in Canberra offers programs that train Australia’s future intelligence, defence and security professionals, while Shandong University has links to China’s nuclear weapons research program.

The US Pentagon added Shandong to a blacklist of institutions in China, Iran and Russia it considers high risk in recent weeks.
