“We won’t prevail in this war of attrition. We have this illusion that everything over there will collapse. It hasn’t collapsed and it won’t. Meanwhile, our own costs keep growing,” Klepach said, though he acknowledged that Ukraine’s economy continues to function thanks to Western aid.

Of course aid to Ukraine is a major factor, and Putin never hesitated to think why nobody is supporting Russia?
Yes they get stuff from Iran and North Korea, but all that is at a cost, they are not giving gifts, Russia has to pay for everything, sometimes even surplus!

Of course the alliance of the willing is also paying extra to USA for everything we buy for Ukraine from USA, because USA is no longer an ally to either democracy in general or Europe or anyone else for that matter. Except of course Russia and Israel which USA is happy to help committing war crimes and genocide.

I think he assumed Ukraine would capitulate immediately before any chance of support.

I bet he did, but still having entered the 5th year now, he should begin to wonder why so many support Ukraine, and no one supports Russia.
It can't even be said that China is supporting Russia, all they do is not sanction them. So China still trade with Russia, but is also exploiting the opportunities it creates that Russia is hard pressed.

Russia is losing all around, even to the ones that might be considered allies. Russia is paying a high price for their "assistance", and is losing their standing and any leverage they may have had. Russia is the underdog in ALL relations now.

China will get the best hand at cannibalizing russian territory when this will end

There are disputed areas that I bet China will "negotiate" back to China.
But it may not end there. Russia's economy is in ruins now, and will probably not be able to recover in a decade.
I wouldn't be surprised if China will be able to buy mineral rich parts of Russia, like USA bought Alaska in 1867, Ironically also after Russia suffered catastrophic losses in Crimea.
