Still wondering why my friend was afraid of moths and merpeople, which they believed existed after encountering otterlike creatures they didn't know about

Merpeople seem like they could be reasoned with, and moths are just dumb and adorable ???

The whole thing doesn't make any sense but it makes me wonder if anyone started to believe in duende after running into grouse
