From a design perspective, I have to agree. It commits a couple sins that other flags get shredded for (busy illustration, words on flag), but always gets a pass because it's "iconic".
Speaks more to the socio-political significance of California than anything else, I guess. Like when supermodels wear hobo clothes as a statement and it's considered haute couture, while on anyone else it's just the result of misfortune.
I do genuinely think the current Mississippi flag looks good, but will go out of my way to say that more often than for other flags as a form of positive reinforcement. There needs to be no doubt that it was a good idea to stop using the old one with the Confederate flag. I'd still praise the shittiest replacement flag design if it meant no turning back.
