the one I use is kega fusion, downloaded from flatpak, last updated in 2009. Being that old not all controls work correctly anymore.

Usually I just use whatever core comes with RetroArch.
Nowadays the best option for Sega seems to be Genesis Plus GX.
The Genesis Plus GX dev themselves recommends Ares or jgenesis though.

BlastEm is active, so is Genesis Plus GX (for use with retroarch or what have you)

Blast Em or Ares is the answer. I think they're both in flatpak. I did have some issues with button mapping in Blast Em but that was a couple years ago.
