Stoke City are believed to be closing in on a deal for San Diego FC's exciting young left-back Luca Bombino. The 20-year-old United States youth international is expected to head to England in hope of finalising a deal, as per a report in The Athletic.

It is understood that Bombino's fee could rise to $5 million (£3.7m) and, although plates are spinning heading towards transfer deadline day on Tuesday, it does not mean a departure is imminent for Eric Bocat. Aaron Cresswell is currently recovering from a knee injury while loan signing Ben Johnson can play on the left although he is primarily a right-back.

This absolutely breaks my heart. We had started grieving as fans over the prospective loss of Manu, and to have this sprung on us in the middle of a losing season, just ahead of probably the biggest regular season match ever is a gut punch.

We know the club has added names to the roster, but this feels like more of the club operating as it intends to: as a money making operation.

What gets me is the fans that are excited about the club making money off this. Maybe they shareholders in a way I'm not? Because unless this translates into at least a playoff run (not just a play in), I don't see how a fan benefits from this at all. Mr Monsour and Mr Machado benefit. I really don't at all.
