They're different genres. This is more like a small scale, dome themed town builder with an emphasis on resources. It's more like a streamlined Surviving Mars.
It's a good game, just a bit bite sized. If you go in with low expectations, it's an enjoyable experience that doesn't overstay its welcome.
Edit: for context, I have 36 hours on if and my recollection is that as what it took to play all the different planets and feel like I've seen everything it has to offer, but I was engaged throughout. So it's not a sandbox to play indefinitely in, but it's worth playing if you like the genre. It's also a good introduction to the genre insofar as it's simple.
Agree with commenter, very different games. I actually think Rimworld is easier. Planetbase can end your run and you can play for another 30 minutes to an hour before you realize it. Shortages tend to compound quick leaving you stuck with no real feedback on what went wrong. It’s usually pretty easy to figure out where you went wrong in Rimworld.
That said, both games are fun and have merit, but Rimworld is the better title for the money of you can only have one.
