It did stop working; the fan revival RiiConnect24 has brought it back along with a bunch of other channels :)

Since they probably get their news from RiiConnect24's servers, they could just read their news on the web at AP News' site.
However, I'd argue that reading the news on a Wii is just more novel and fun, so I respect it as well.
