The X-37B is hosting several technology demonstrations from government partners on this mission, include laser communications and a quantum inertial sensor designed to support navigation when GPS is unavailable. On its previous mission, the vehicle executed a first of its kind aerobraking maneuver to change orbits while conserving propellant.
Nothing to see here!

Per the article, this was last year:
August 2025, not 2026.
Still cool, though. As far as we know, the OTV-8 mission is still ongoing. It hasn't landed yet, and is still up there doing super secret spy stuff :)

In my heart of hearts I hope OTV-8 is fucking hard with russian satellites in ways that are infuriatingly hard to detect.
Given this US administration though it is just as likely that it is working for the russians however...

WHAT'S IT DOING!?!

Probably nothing, it isn't like there are multiple ongoing geopolitical crisis that involve satellites and sensitive information, or that rely on being able to somewhat predict the position/timing of spy satellites over sensitive areas!
The aerobraking the X-37b is doing is wildly cool stuff though from a physics/spaceflight standpoint!
...I still remember the first time I heard that the space shuttle had to be careful about its re-entry angle so it didn't "skip" or "bounce" off of the atmosphere and I immediately thought... "but wait.. that sounds cool as hell...".... I guess I wasn't the only one lol.

Yeah it's a cool vehicle for sure, and of course it must have some sort of reconnaissance role... I'm just so curious about what that role actually is, there are a lot of theories about it.
Like is its job to spy on other satellites, or to disable other satellites, or is it a servicing and repair drone, does it have a robotic arm hidden in the fuselage, what else does it have in there, is it weaponized?
You know all that stuff.

It has a robotic arm like the space shuttle, it can do whatever the hell it wants essentially.
