'Lake America'? Trump's 'utterly ridiculous' renaming met with laughter in Kingston

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/kingston-mayor-calls-trump-lake-america-renaming-ridiculous-9.7323747

Paterson said everyone on council has been asked about Trump's latest move and how they intend to reply.

"The overwhelming sentiment is that it's not worth even responding," said Paterson. "It's not worth wasting our time. The best thing we can possibly do is just ignore the silliness."

For people in the states? It hasn't changed for me.

Google isn't the good guys so I'm not surprised..

Yup, for the states. If you access it from elsewhere it hasn't changed.. at least not yet. I guess google doesn't want to anger Sir Shitsalot.

For a day or so it showed "Lake Ontario (Lake America)" for me

Edit: now it's back to Lake Ontario

Pretty sure it's all just automated; maps pulls in data from "verified providers" for new roads, buildings, etc. They used to do all the work but that doesn't scale and it's hard to discover building renames, etc. So they built the infra to allow verified parties to push changes. I used to work with HERE's map databases (competitor) and also spent some time at Google, but not on the maps team.

I never thought you might need a vpn just to get around region-locked world maps, yet here we are.

Klox@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 13h

Yeah there's quite a lot of region management going on now. These companies need to meet data residency and other regional laws/requirements, and they do this pretty naively. You can bypass a lot by VPNing in to whatever country most aligns with your values.
