Alas, the previous moderators became inactive, so I have gained control over the community.

My moderation philosophy is simple: While I might express personal opinions in threads, I will moderate based on the Lemmy TOS, meaning that bigotry and personal attacks will not be tolerated, but otherwise discussion should be pretty darned free. (It can be hard to articulate every last thing that can be disruptive, so you may occasionally find someone acting badly that's not articulated in the rules, but I'll take care of that anyway).

If you see something that breaks the Lemmy TOS, please do report it. Please do not report things like "I don't like this post", though¹.

I view myself as a facilitator, not a dictator. Hopefully you will rarely know I'm here. If you have any issues or want to have any meta discussions, I try to "rule" by consent and consensus, so I'm always open to seeing a meta thread to discuss how to make things better.

Please submit Texas-related things to the community! It'd be nice to have a great community for a great state.

And if the above is just too much to read, I'll just say it here: Don't Mess With c/Texas. ;-)

Historically, saying something like that means people report this post with "I don't like this post" to be clever. If you need to get it out of your system, go ahead and report this post, but at least come up with a clever reason, wouldya? :)

Also, a little bit of personal introduction:

While I was born in Mississippi, my first memory in life was packing up the big U-Haul truck as we moved to Texas before I turned three years old
Lived my childhood and early adult life around DFW - Lewisville, Burleson, Oak Cliff, North Dallas
Lived 15 years in Panama City, FL
Now almost a decade in Hampton Roads, VA
Texas is where I consider myself to be most from. Family there, friends there.

Okay, just kidding about that last one. All of Texas is great (but of course everywhere has its share of problems)

As a bit of moderator history:

I've hosted and administered most of the resources for Simutrans which includes being the administrator of The International Simutrans Forum for almost 25 years
I was a default mod on reddit for a few years (pics, videos), as well as moderating a few mid-sized communities for even longer. I'm also the "father" of r/nottheonion - taking a dead subreddit and building it up to 20k people, bringing on a mod team, and when it great to 200k, stepping away as the rest of the mod team and I had slightly different visions and while i could have removed all of them, I felt it better to let them handle things - and in fairness, it became a default subreddit after that, so I made the right call.

c/Texas is not a busy community, but I will be posting news and such as I run across it. So I hope to see y'all around here more! :)

META DISCUSSION:

The last vestiges of reddit for me include me moderating my local subreddit. I like having a news feed and I post articles that pertain to the city over there.

I've set up a news feed for "Texas", which has a LOT more interesting things since it's a rather wide topic.

I don't know how many I'll post per day - I generally post everything relevant over on reddit and it's like 1-3 per day usually.

I found five things I thought were really interesting and am posting them all today. I don't know what subsequent days will bring, but I'm thinking a limit of around five (and fewer if fewer than five are really interesting), but I'm open to feedback.

…which is a general rule. I'm very open to feedback on how the community is run. I like "ruling" by consent. I think of myself as a facilitator, not a dictator - I try to remove spam, make sure folks are civil, make sure nazis and bigots are removed, but otherwise the community should be free to post and discuss things as it likes.

(One reason I haven't touched the sidebar is that the rules are basically the above and what I consider to be the main basic set of rules for any community. "Don't be an asshat", if you want it in fewer words. heh)
