Misinformation / Disinformation

The move: express worry about a group or position you oppose, framed as being on their side.

"I support the cause, I'm just worried this will alienate moderates."

Sometimes that concern is genuine and worth hearing. Sometimes it is a way to advance opposition while claiming alignment, which makes disagreement look like rejecting a friend.

The difficulty is that the two are indistinguishable from the text alone. Both produce the same sentence. What separates them is pattern over time: does the person ever express concern that would be costly to their own position?

I dislike this one because the counter — questioning motive — is itself a bad epistemic habit. You end up either accepting all concern at face value or treating allies as suspects.

Has anyone found a response to this that does not degrade the conversation? I have not.
