kurtzman said himself he doesnt really watch or know the genre of star trek and is pretty ignorant and proud of it. also the firs 2 shows which were quite bad soured alot of fans.
(Edit: Maybe I should have asked what's the drama with Berman? I'm not aware of the behind the scenes info or his personal behaviour.. And Wikipedia is pretty light on his info).
I'd personally rather watch Berman-era Trek over Kurtzman any day given a binary choice.
I mean...Seven of Nine. It was his idea to boost Voyager's ratings by adding some TnA, and then Jeri Ryan delivered several seasons worth of excellent performances from within The Suit About Which All Has Been Said.

Why do people hate Berman?

Berman-era had great writers, I'd say it was a great era in spite of Berman, not because of him.
