Day 775 of posting a Daily Screenshot from the games I've been playing

Today’s game is Pokemon Platinum. Admittedly, I was going to keep playing KoTOR, but after hearing bank is shutting down, I want to try and meet the deadline to complete the Pokédex in all the games. I think having that deadline will be a fun challenge, and I’m considering transferring them all to Pokemon Home (I’m not sure what all that will require though so it’s more of a “that would be a fun thing to do” scenario).

Since my main goal is to complete the Pokédex, I’ve mainly been running around in the woods nearby the flower area. There were few Pokemon there I’m missing and once I nabbed them I had moved on to the next area.

The next area of course being the gym. I went through it 3 times now. And I want to just say: Fuck Gardenia and Especially her Turtwig. The Turtwig keeps one shorting a level 30 Pokemon which is complete bullshit. Anyways, I gave her a few more attempts before deciding this is a tomorrow thing. I need to come back with more strategy.

Speaking of more strategy, that’s what I love about the older games. Don’t get me wrong, I love some of the newer stuff but the older stuff feels so much more hands on and challenging compared to it. And I love it for that.

Anyways, I know this isn’t the most glamorous of game choice, but it matters to me so I thought I’d use it today, especially because it’s the only game I captured due to being out for a D&D session, so not a lot of time today.

Few years ago I completed the pokedex on Gen 6/7, using transfers back from Gen 4-5. That was fun. Especially Black, the way they balanced content in BW felt very fresh IMO, and the sprite work is very nice in Gen 5.

I kinda fell off the series after USUM, didn't care about Let's Go, there was the "dexit" debacle, the whole "get used to not being able to get eveyone in one game from now on". And then the absurdly bad performance/glitch reports in new episodes.

Pokopia is my only Pokémon-adjacent game since Ultra-Moon, and that's mainly because I heard it was great and I liked Dragon Quest Builders 2. And, to be honest, it is a very cool game. I just finished the base game's pokédex.

I think the newest game I’ve played to completion was SWSH. I enjoyed it but really don’t have much to say.

I’m with you on BW though. It feels like a league of its own. If I didn’t have a living Dex for BW I might have gone and done BW 2 again instead of platinum

I think having that deadline will be a fun challenge, and I'm considering transferring them all to Pokemon Home (I'm not sure what all that will require though so it's more of a "that would be a fun thing to do" scenario).

As someone who’s trying to migrate everything to home there’s a decent amount of options out there. From the screenshots, it looks like you’re playing off an emulator, so you would first need a way to migrate your save file or files to the original hardware however possible. Once it’s on original hardware, simply use Pokemon Bank and then you can transfer to Pokemon Home.

The past few years I’ve played through the rom hacks of Yellow (Yellow Legacy) and Crystal (Crystal Legacy). This past month I migrated everything from those games to Ultra Moon. Once there, into bank and finally into home. So I can absolutely say that it’s very possible, but requires a few things:

•A modded 3DS with the checkpoint app installed

•If possible a second 3DS that isn’t modded (to mitigate any issues. 100% optional, but definitely a proceed at your own risk deal)

•The ability to migrate your saves between devices if playing on non native hardware

•Access to something like PKSM to validate your Pokemon (e.g. Yellow and Crystal legacy allow you to “catch em all.” Version exclusive Pokemon may be blocked or flagged when migrating. You have the option to modify when and where one was caught, if that’s important to you or whoever is reading this. How “legal” that is, may be considered a gray area for most people but the Pokemon company probably has something in place to detect if a Weedle is caught in Yellow).

•Optional but may keep things cleaner: importing your Pokemon into either a gen 6 or 7 cartridge

Normal migration can be done with the above information. I’ll update my reply with links to a few helpful tools in a bit that I have used or stumbled upon shortly.

Updated with hopefully better spacing. Was not supposed to have a giant paragraph like that. Here’s links for all the tools I mentioned:

Checkpoint which will allow for backing up and restoring your save files. This is essential if migrating to and from non native hardware over to the 3DS.

Either PKSM if adjusting/validating your Pokemon on the 3DS or PKHeX which will allow you to validate on your PC prior to using checkpoint.

And while PKSM also does what these two apps do, you have PKVault or OpenHome which are basically Pokemon Home programs for your PC. This can save a lot of time migrating into one game rather than jumping through all the hoops that Gamefreak and the Pokemon company setup for the older games.

Feel free to ask any questions if needed. Good luck if you decide to do the challenge!

And Kotor is worth returning to when you are ready to. One of the best Star Wars games out there

I do actually have native hardware! Along with everything setup to transfer it. I meant to talk about it in the post but forgot, but I actually had transferred my save off my 3DS and played it in an emulator to get the screenshots until I find a better way to get ahold of them because ftp on CachyOS seems to be really difficult to keep a stable connection for me

Baaron87@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 4d (3 replies)

Oh, nice! That will definitely be doable then. I was able to get ftp to work once, but that was with Bazzite. I’ve mainly been moving the micro SD card instead of trying to resolve the ftp issue lol.

In that case the simplest path for you would be to take your saves, put the ones you want to move into PK Vault (haven’t had luck with OpenHome on Linux) and send them to either a gen 6 or gen 7 save. PK Vault will give you a heads up if there’s any potential issues before migrating. Then from there, to the 3DS > Bank > Home

MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 4d (2 replies)

FTP for me will work for like 5 minutes and then decide “nope. We’re not doing this” and crap out on me lol. I’d move the micro SD Card but I have the battery and stuff duck taped in because the back plate went missing and started flaking apart (N3DSXL Model).

I’ll look into Open Home, I was using Pkhex to trade them into ORAS Before, but Pkhex is finicky to find saves with so OpenHome might be a better option

Baaron87@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 3d (1 reply)

Ah, yeah. Last I tried ftp I got it to connect but any subsequent attempts it would act like it wasn’t available. I modded a N2DSXL so the Micro SD isn’t as cumbersome to get to. The system is a massive fingerprint magnet though lol.

That back plate can be a pain to deal with if it breaks or goes missing. Definitely don’t blame wanting to not mess with that. (It’s why I opted to not mod my N3DSXL). May be worth getting a replacement from a donor system or an aftermarket replacement down the road.

Hopefully you have better luck with OpenHome than I did. The appimage would consistently crash for me on Bazzite (was able to get it working on an old MacBook I have laying around, but I’m not going to add another device just to use it lol); I’d think CachyOS would have an easier time with it, which I think there’s multiple ways to install it there in comparison if I remember right

I might try and see if a static IP for my 3DS will help it. I doubt it would but it doesn’t hurt to hope.

Honestly I have gripes about the entire shell of the N3DSXL. The backplate on the upper and lower screens are this cheap vinyl material that peeled off so easily from average use. I honestly don’t know what they were thinking. I hope someone out there eventually comes up with a mod that replaces it with something better. Until then though I’ve been eyeing a shell swap but I’m not sure because I know it’s just gonna start peeling again

I’ll let you know how Open Home goes once I get it setup. I know Cachy has a bit of Setup with Appimages I think but I haven’t ever really had any big issues with them

I think it's great that you are doing this series.
