Three men mysteriously emerged from a Midtown Manhattan manhole last week — in at least the fourth incident involving someone venturing into the Big Apple’s sewer system this summer
People keep popping out of New York City sewers — and no one knows why.
The guesses have run the gamut. Social media users have joked about wannabe Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the Super Mario brothers or “mole people” who live underground.
Some have speculated that it’s the latest influencer stunt. Meanwhile, New York Police Department detectives have appeared to suggest that it was migrants scavenging underground for supplies.
While the incidents have been going on for months, the most recent occurred near Madison Square Garden August 18.

I thought I was making a joke when I called them effluencers.

Oh my god, he was right!
I’ve got a story about this. I used to live in Manhattan. One day, at the ATM, I noticed a man in the middle of the road hollering at passersby. When I approached, I could hear what he was saying:
“THERE ARE PEOPLE LIVING UNDER THE GROUND! WHY DOES NOBODY BELIEVE ME!? THERE ARE PEOPLE! UNDERGROUND! SOMEBODY LISTEN! THERE ARE BLUE PEOPLE LIVING UNDER THE EARTH!”
He then removed what appeared to be a boot hook from his coat and lifted a manhole cover from the middle of the street.
“I’LL PROVE IT! I’LL SHOW YOU ALL!”
He then descended into the hole and pulled the cover closed. I waited on that corner for 20 whole minutes to see if he’d reemerge, but he never did. Never would have guessed he was totally right.
Godspeed, mole man.

Says four people were arrested and charged. Did they not ask them what they were doing?
My guess was copper thieves, but the ones caught on camera had waders and gloves, no tools, and no copper.

NYC treasure hunters know that the real shit is going on on the curbs.
I found an Eames group management chair reproduction by Manhattan home design on the curb. Probably worth $2500. just fucking sitting there on the curb.
That motherfucker just sat in my living room for maybe 10 years? It just sat there because it was pretty. I enjoyed looking at it.
I don’t think I sat on at once
It was just beautiful to look upon. Such a gorgeous piece of design.
