The Smothers Brothers are awesome. I've been a fan for years. Tommy is a comic genius, and their show 'The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour' was super progressive and frequently controversial. Highly recommend it if you can find it. There's plenty of clips on YouTube.

I love how Tommy was the greatest internal creative force in the show & act, but he routinely played the slow, bumbling, excitable guy of the duo. I did read a book about the show, and it sounded like it was a constant, grueling struggle to keep the show's vision pure (so to speak), set against the network's constant pressure to censor or water it down. A battle they ultimately lost, sadly.
Also interesting in that right around the same time, there was a growing movement to essentially tear down American democracy, as first exemplified by the Nixon admin. Of course that's a long story, so.
I came to them late in the mid aughts via an internet stand-up 'radio' channel on Windows Media Player of all things, so I never saw any original airings of their stuff. I'm not sure anyone else in Aus has even heard of them, much the shame. I've mostly just watched them on YouTube and downloading stuff.
Ah, interesting. As a late middle-aged bloke, I'm going to risk assuming that you're younger gen than me, and I must say it's always pleasant to hear about younger gens enjoying 'the good ol' stuff.' (eh, 'pologies if I presumed too much there)
Hey if you want to return the favor? I was a big fan of Jim Jefferies, until he seemed to get started on his fairly recent misogynistic line of jokes. So, could you possibly recommend a favorite standup comic from Straya, to sort of balance the scales? 😅

Nah, mid fifties, but a life-long fan of stand-up.
For younger Aussie comics, I've been enjoying Daniel Muggleton and Daniel Connell. Both have full shows on YouTube.
And for the classics, you can't beat Lano and Woodley and The Umbilical Brothers.
