In the seven days following the altercation, Moisescu, an ex-IDF soldier with over 60 criminal convictions in Canada, has still not been arrested by police. He has since posted blogs targeting activists and journalists with names and photographs accompanied by threats of violence.

Despite witnessing the encounter from several feet away, officers from the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) riot squad declined to arrest Moisescu on the scene after briefly detaining him.

“I literally walked the man on over to the police and informed them of the fact that the man had committed a hate crime against me, and I said that I would like to (press charges)

“The officer literally laughed and said, ‘Okay.’ He said, ‘Well, what do you want me to do?’ and I said, ‘Your job!’”

Citizens don't press charges in Canada. I'm not sure if that's a translation error, but if you tell a cop you want to "press charges" there's not really anything they can do.

Now, reporting the crime should lead to a police investigation. But we all know what they say about cops.

You can request that a justice of the peace (the police) to have a person brought to court, since the police/court presses charges. This is called "swearing or laying an information" and is equivalent of pressing charges (might be called differently in Quebec).

You can also start a "private prosecution" by going to the police or court and telling them that you've been a victim of a crime. They're supposed to listen and then decide whether to issue a summons or warrant.

I don't understand. The person was a victim of assault, which is a crime as far as I know. I got into a fight with someone with a bad case of road rage that sucker punched me. I pressed charges. He was arrested and went to court and got several weeks of community labour as punishment. I was told had he had a known past of aggression he could have faced jail time.

Moisescu does have a violent criminal past. He's made threats of violence and murder both vocally and written. There's record of it. And he assaulted a man. The victim had a right to press charges.

The real reason the cop didn't want to do his job is because they see the protesters as a bunch of pests that bother them and make them work extra by standing around looking like idiots. So of course he's gonna laugh when one of them gets punched in the face.
