I was in Egypt this year for business. We usually get a cab service and airport assistance booked via our office in Cairo, I can check the price for that tomorrow. We also used Uber few times and we paid something like 250EGP for short trips between the hotel and the mall, like 5~10km. It's like 5USD. Some Uber will only take you if you pay cash, at least for short trips like that. I've only been to Cairo surrounding, no experience with Luxor. Luxor is 640km away from Cairo, I suppose you are aware of that.
Also, you need cash when you arrive at the airport, the visiting visa is 30USD and they will return the change in EGP.
As far as I know, they only take cash for the Visa. USD and Euro are fine.
I think there is another app that locals use for rides, it don't know it, I must ask.
I haven't spent time in the historical Cairo city. Our office is outside in a newly developed area, 6th October it's called, not far from the pyramids of Giza. It's a good 30 minutes drive from Cairo center and I haven't got the time or motivation to visit downtown. The new Grand museum is very good I've heard, I will try to save some time for it on my next visit.
Cool, thanks. Wow, sweet office spot, congrats! Did you get out to the main pyramids or any of the smaller sites? I'm curious if you can get close enough they're still amazing or if everything is roped/fenced off and you're too far away.
I went to visit the great pyramids on a previous trip. You need to buy a ticket to enter the archeological site. There, you can enter inside the pyramid (this I didn't do), you can get as close as you want, just not allowed to climb obviously. You can see the sphinx, there are many smaller tombes and structures around. It's probably a good idea to take a guide to give you more details and explanation.
