I'm interested in finding DNS including MX records for a site that has Wayback Machine snapshots from 2002-2005. I have tried various web searches, and attempted to see if this info is available through archive.org in connection to the wayback machine snapshots, but I have not found anything. Am I looking in the wrong place? How do I find this info?

@slazer2au@lemmy.world there are at least some services providing historical DNS record lookups (dnshistory[.]org, completedns[.]com, etc), but none of the ones I've found go back to 2005. (Sorry for replying like this, for whatever reason your reply isn't showing up on my instance.)

A claim is being made about the domain having been taken out of use by 2005, and being unable to receive emails at that time. There are strong circumstances pointing to this claim being an outright lie, not least the fact that the domain was available for scraping as of 2005. I think DNS records from the time period could contribute to shedding light on this :)

That's pretty limited. DNS records won't show whether the mail server was up or not.

Email archives would be best. If not that, look to see if any of the scanners like Censys or Shodan have records back that far showing SMTP running.

If the DNS records for the mail server were missing, it would suggest that they didn't intend to receive mail, even if a mail server were actually up.

But the records could've also been left up long after the server was taken down just out of laziness or mismanagement.

Certainly, and likely. In which case, the DNS records would tell us nothing.
But we can draw a completely different conclusion if the records were taken down deliberately.

I don't think there is an archive for name records. The current records are stored in a server cache for the lifetime of the record.

Some providers like Cloudflare or Level 3 may have archived records.
That far back might be a stretch. But you'll probably have a hard time getting in touch with the right people; If you don't already have a account manager with them.
