Einstein's theory of relativity proved that Vulcan wasn't needed to explain Mercury's orbit.

In mythology, one account indicates that Jupiter cast Vulcan out of Olympus. Jupiter in his youth was almost eaten by his father, but was saved when Jupiter's mom swaddled a stone in Jupiter's place.

So in both cases, Vulcan was cast out of the heavens by a stone (ein stein).
