At a time when Republican leaders are increasingly targeting the state's growing Muslim communities, barbecue joints like Goldee's that offer halal options are thriving in Texas. Across the state, Muslim pitmasters are gaining recognition for putting their own spin on one of Texas' most iconic culinary traditions.
At least a dozen barbecue spots now serve halal meats, including Yearby's Barbecue & Waterice, run by Black Muslim couple CJ and Sabrina Henley, soon-to-be in Plano, and Levant Mediterranean BBQ, a restaurant with locations in Houston and Frisco and whose all-beef menu includes a brisket shawarma sandwich.
"Now there are so many options, and for us to have highly rated barbecue, it's a blessing," said Haris Ghaffar, who drove an hour from Celina and stood in 90-degree weather for nearly two hours with a friend for the halal options at Goldee's.

Halal meat is often preferable even for non-Muslims because it has a higher standard of hygiene in the slaughter and butchering process.

I just like what they tend to cook with it :)

A halal bacon cheeseburger is a thing of beauty. I can't wait for halal American BBQ to make it up to my area.

Yes, if it’s slaughtered right. Turkey bacon is a fixture in after pub kebab/pizza takeaways.

I know chicken is, so I would assume so. Don't know for sure

Religion has taught me you can justify anything as long as you torture the source material enough.
NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io · 2 pts · 1d
Or you can just use non-pork bacon lmao.
daychilde@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d
I love when food gets all fusion - korean tacos. I want halal BBQ now, hells yeah.
People complain about "authenticity" - I'm excited when people combine foods. It's the shitty old "authentic" stuff that's boring. Most places used to eat, like porridge centuries ago. lol (not everywhere, and a lot of places did decently with what they had, but man, today? We have so many amazing things)

That's why Vietnamese is my favorite food on earth. French cooking techniques with southeast asian ingredients.

I prefer my meat secular like God intended

My experience with "halal" places is that they are extra delicious. As an athiest, I couldn't care less about the religious aspect.

Indeed. My comment was removed for “incivility” which is bullshit.
PapaStevesy@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 9h
Yeah I would have removed it because you can't spell "moron" properly, can't have trolls mispelling their insults.
daychilde@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 10h
Well, that's bad news. If you can't understand why your comment was uncivil, it means you're likely to break the rules again.

Please do not pretend to be obtuse. If you do not understand how your comment was uncivil, you will find that you are banned from this community.

daychilde@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d
And, pray tell, what exactly is the problem here?
homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d
Meat. Gross slabs of muscle and sarcoplasm. Factory slaughter.
What, are some of these tankies all bungclenched as if this is some kinda anti-Muslim comment? Reader, I assure you it is not.
daychilde@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 1d
No, you have every right to believe whatever you want about meat, and people have every right to vote how they wish.
I'm glad it's anti-meat sentiment rather than bigotry. But it can be hard to tell with a comment in isolation. I did a quick perusal of your history to try and determine, and figured it was the anti-meat side based on your previous posting.
Don't be surprised when you post unpopular opinions if you attract downvotes. I do, and expect it when it happens.
Frankly, I'm not particularly happy with factory meat, but I'm fine with the principles of it as I personally believe meat is a valid food source. I respect your disagreement with that. To me, this is like violence vs sex in movies. I could care less about sexual content - I don't particularly want it but I have no problem with it. But most of my fellow Americans, it seems, feel that way about blood and gore. They want blood and gore and many of them think sexual content is wrong. I detest blood and gore. So I bear that in mind when I post. You should similarly be prepared to be shunned when you speak out with a comment like "eww" about something almost all of the rest of us are fine with. But especially when it's not clear if you were talking about the meat or the people.
 Just how things go.
homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 11h
I think it’s the assumption that “eww” could have anything to do with someone’s race or religion. That’s just messed up.
Especially when the OP image is a guy holding up two sides of a butchered animal.
jaaake@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 10h
If the article was "Humans eat meat" and your response was "ewww" it would be very easy to understand what you were reacting to.
You provided no context for your comment, purely assuming that anyone reading it could interpret it correctly, which would only be possible if they were familiar with your views of every topic listed in the headline and pictured in the preview image. It's ridiculous to assume strangers are on the internet are aware of your specific views of meat, Texas BBQ, halal food selection/preparation, and Muslim people.
homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 10h
At least three other people were “able” to assume I was referencing the giant floppy slabs of bloody flesh in the photo without needing hundreds of pages of explanation.
Unless - uh oh - three people thought I was saying “Muslim people are gross” and were agreeing with that??
Man this comm is super weird. Go figure.
Honestly, have you ever seen anyone say they don’t like a group of people by saying “Eww”? Really? Here on Lemmy? That’s just such a bizarre reaction to me.
jaaake@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 9h
Honestly my assumption was that you were opposed to non-pork BBQ. Again, you provided no context and are now placing the blame on others for your poor communication skills.
Also, by definition halal meat is not bloody. It has been drained of blood as part of the preparation process.
daychilde@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 10h
I struggle to believe you really don't understand how "eww" directed at a post that involves a group of people constantly targeted by bigotry might possibly be misconstrued, considering the vast majority of people eat meat.
But you do you.
homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 10h
I explained it to you, and others, in several different ways. Plainly. Simply. As anyone here could easily understand. If you’re not convinced, i just can’t help that.
Imma let you read that again and think on it some. Take your time. Consider the vast majority, and bigotry.
daychilde@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 8h
I still don't believe you can't understand, but whatever.
homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world · -2 pts · 10h
Huge hunks of breast meat.
“Oh that guy hates Muslims.”
. . . What???
