Weird little guys of FOSS

https://drewdevault.com/weird-guys/

There are a few weird guys in there that I wasn't already aware of. I knew that Louis Rossmann was kind of an asshole, but being openly active on kiwifarms is actually fucked up.

Oh damn, that's a good list of open source weirdos, most of them unsurprisingly white dudes...It really sucks that there's so many creeps in open source. I was surprised by The Primogen associations, Louis Rossmann is a guy I kinda suspected of being not good. Welp, two more people to cut out of my YouTube watching.

mawhrin@awful.systems · 8 pts · 1d (3 replies)

primeagen was presenting on the omarchy parteitag (among other people presenting was tj devries, one of the neovim core devs).

LostWanderer@fedia.io · 6 pts · 23h (2 replies)

Yeah, I didn't watch him constantly (only caught some videos here and there). Its good info to file away, I basically have a lot of Linux youtubers that glaze Omarchy, the Arch but more fascist and AI slopped on muted forever. As anyone who supports what DHH is doing or making is on my suspicious person list.

mawhrin@awful.systems · 7 pts · 23h (1 reply)

the nice thing about omarchy is that the fascist and fascist-adjacent arseholes naturally gravitate towards it.

LostWanderer@fedia.io · 5 pts · 15h

I will grant Omarchy that, it's the perfect flytrap and litmus test for Linux users, a great way to figure out fascist or fascist-adjacent shit burglar by their response to learning what a POS that DHH is. There are several distros like that...

Damn I did not know about Geerling, kinda a bummer, but in the way that I'm not surprised

jaschop@awful.systems · 11 pts · 1d (1 reply)

I need to remember the multiple people that pointed me to Next.js and lose some respect retroactively. Though it did feel like a sneaky Vercel ad even back then.

petrol_sniff_king@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 2 pts · 11h

Wait, what's wrong with Next?
I'm actually asking, I've never used it.

pmk@piefed.ca · 10 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Hey, I know that art from somewhere...

pmjv@lemmy.sdf.org · 6 pts · 1d

Technically I'm on the list now!

I think it's safe to say that any kind of chronically online "celebrity"/well-known person in open source space with "strong" opinions on everything is more than a little weird. It just goes with the territory.

self@awful.systems · 2 pts · 15h

yeah you know we don’t actually need you to fashjacket devault here, thanks

noxypaws@pawb.social · 9 pts · 13h

I'm so glad to see homophobic catholic extremist Jeff Geerling made the cut. I resent that I followed him for years without knowing how much hate he holds in his heart for me.

Also glad Louis Rossmann is getting his due callout here. He definitely does a lot of good but he does and says some truly inexcusable shit.

gnuplusmatt@reddthat.com · 9 pts · 1d

It sucks when you see someone that you thought was doing good work turn out to be a weirdo

self@awful.systems · 8 pts · 15h

hey motherfuckers, if you’re going to come at devault in this thread for doing the work, have something better than this weak fash shit, thanks

mawhrin@awful.systems · 4 pts · 1d

there's a few names i'd probably add; one is peter simon, known as probono, the appimage maintainer, a professional wayland hater (he's maintaining a ginormous gist that lists the failures of wayland, most of which is not true, not true anymore or at least grossly exaggerated).

degen@midwest.social · 4 pts · 12h (1 reply)

Friiiick, the ladybird dev? I've been keeping the project in the back of my mind until it's ready for daily use. I was so pumped for an open browser

dgerard@awful.systems · 3 pts · 11h

oh yeah he's an enthusiastic techfash

after 33 years online I can confidently say that "censorship resistance" is overwhelmingly a right-wing shibboleth

samvines@awful.systems · 9 pts · 21h (3 replies)

The "censorship resistance" being criticised here is in support of free speech absolutism: posting propaganda, misinformation and brigading and trolling people with no recourse. This is bad and has real and meaningful consequences for people like Jason Arday who was recently driven-to-suicide for being black and successful amid false plagiarism allegations and a media witch hunt.

I agree that left leaning causes also need resilient comms infra to allow for organisation. Unfortunately these issues are two sides of the same coin. I think it is completely fair to criticise people like Dorsey who left bluesky in 2024 because of their moderation approach which is hardly heavy handed - especially if you are a far right hater of trans people . We can condemn this behaviour and also hold the belief that we need resilient infra that the government can't easily seize.

Oh for sure and I am definitely strong Manning Drew's post to the max here. If it turns out he just generally means that resilient infra is bad with no nuance then I agree with your original point.

self@awful.systems · 2 pts · 15h

nuanced

oh fuck off

Jayjader@jlai.lu · 3 pts · 14h

The weirdness is much less visible in Primeagen's content nowadays (albeit I've almost completely stopped watching it so maybe it's now getting more overt?), I'm not overly surprised devault has nothing concrete to point at - in fact I wouldn't be surprised if he has scrubbed the more egregious things from his youtube channel.

It's never been big attention-grabbing things but more a certain level of crypto-fashy offhanded remarks and general vibes - been brought up in the weekly snarks a few months back.

The biggest recent criticism I could make is having DHH on fire over an hour with allegedly no pushback on how terrible his "distro" is given how much primagen supposedly prides himself on his technical prowess. Then again, he's not using omarchy himself so what does he care if the rubes in his audience get duped into trashing their machines?

i don't see an issue with making a list of really bad people as a means of warning others to stay away

mawhrin@awful.systems · 3 pts · 1d

can you elaborate?

self@awful.systems · 2 pts · 15h (1 reply)

tacobuttplug guys! get it! you get it!

daemonspudguy@awful.systems · 2 pts · 12h

…I don't get it.

Calling someone a fascist is hardly defamation in US law, especially since basically everyone on the list are working towards a society where it's absolutely fine to call them fascists, because they're fascists and want to make fascism great again.

OK maybe not RMS

the point is to have a catalogue, and to realise how bad the situation is.

mawhrin@awful.systems · 5 pts · 1d

i mean, there must come a reckoning, and believe me that every single dude on that list will try to memoryhole their activities

mawhrin@awful.systems · 5 pts · 23h (3 replies)

there was nothing weird about RMS allegations

mawhrin@awful.systems · 6 pts · 21h (1 reply)

it sure wasn't, considering that rms' highly problematic antics are well known for literal decades, and ddv only amplified them.

if not for the fact the bylaws of fsf basically give stallman control over the foundation no matter who's voted into the board, he'd be ousted many times.

istewart@awful.systems · 2 pts · 9h

Never realized Stallman did a Zuckerberg before Zuckerberg did, that's worth knowing and definitely not a point in his favor

self@awful.systems · 1 pts · 15h

fuck off fash
