New Farm to Combat Depression

I've played stardew since 2018 and recently I've created a new farm about every year (usually in the fall). I often get something different out of each playthrough, but this time I'm explicitly trying to get myself out of a depressive funk I'm stuck in.

I chose the fishing farm because it's one I've only done once before and it can be fun to have islands for different parts of the farm. Does anyone else use SDV as a mental health resource? I often joke that it's like cheap therapy for me.

---Update--- I've been having a great time with this playthrough. I got an early ancient seed and thought this coincidence that I matched this junimo was adorable

I love when a game pulls me in. Stardew does this. I also like a game called Wandering Villiage for this purpose.

honestly, maybe its because we are engaging the logical brain over the emtional, bet thats why it helps.

That's a great take on why I react to SDV the way I do.

I've had wandering villages on my wishlist for a while. If it goes on sale again I'll have to scoop it up

What's your farms name?

Waggles@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 2d

It's Escape Reality farm. Usually I'm less meta and more focused on a fun theme, but I wasn't feeling that this run. Do you have a favorite farm you've made?

Yes and no. I find sitting at my computer too long to make the depression worse. I need to change my environment to get out of the icky headspace. It's very much that meme, I'm going for a stupid walk for my stupid mental health and I'm mad that it's working.

But it does help me escape from some of the anxiety inducing things. My last few months have been waiting for certain things to happen. I'm not a patient person. Losing myself in stardew has helped keep a lot of that anxiety at bay.

For what it's worth, I hope your depression eases and you're able to start thriving!

I appreciate your kindness and I definitely need to get out more. I have dogs I have to walk multiple times a day so I'm forced to get some walks in even when I don't feel like it. It helps the mental health a bit for sure.

You got this!

I am always very depressed, most of my life is behaving foolishly so people will insult me and engage with me so I don't have to feel the depression.

Video games are an escape but trying to run away into a single video game doesn't work for me.

I can't give you advice because what works for me (alcohol and self deprecating jokes) doesn't work for everyone.

For me Depression is a long long long journey. I have been told by everyone that talking to therapists helped.. I've talked to multiple therapists, I've tried medication... Only making myself a joke for everyone to laugh at and alcohol have helped me.

Please seek therapists and medication before you follow my me. And please please do everything you can before you take that final option.

I know you probably know, but alcohol is a depressant.

I gave it up as a support to my sober partner. Meaning I didnt have a problem with alcohol dependence (my sober self disagrees but thats not here nor there). But when I quit alcohol, I still have depression, but coping with that depression became much easier, like, so much easier, I cant overstate this. It honestly shocked me.

Take care of yourself aye?

BigBoyShuanzee@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Thankyou. I'm more scared of myself when I'm not drunk. I'm sad, boring and miserable..

I don't drink until I pass out. I just drink until I stop hating myself.

The only other thing that keeps me going is walking, I do 7000-12000 steps daily.

Madzielle@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 1 pts · 1d

Aye thats a solid step count, walking is great. Though, must not feel great how you say you feel when sober. Dont like that. Im sorry it's that way.

You mentioned you go to therapy if I remember right? I hope you are working with them in this. Wish we could at least knock feeling boring off your list. I am boring friend. You know what I want most right now? A steam cleaner, so I can deep clean my couch. Like, thats my biggest aspiration in life atm haha. I gaurentee I am more boring than you :) Seems needlessly extra to feel boring. Be boring then!

I'll let you know, if you are ever sober curious (beacuse I promise all these things change (idk if they get better, it is not magic), but they change with sobriety over the long term. So if you are ever curious, there is a stop drinking comm here on the fediverse, and you can always message me if you wanna chat about it. I watched my partner struggle to get sober for years before he finally made it. Youll be amazed how many people feel just like you do.

There can be a day where you dont hate yourself. It's the worst feeling, I recognize it, and, I hope one day, even if you still partake, you dont hate yourself anymore

Thanks for the support and guidance. Most of my adult life has been varying levels of depression. However, lately I've been out of work for nearly a year and other resources are exhausted. I'm not immediately facing homelessness, but there's been continuous stress on me for way too long now. There isn't much else I can do for therapy or even medication right now.

Been medicating with weed, wine and stardew for the last year. This is my first farm, love it

Waggles@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1d (1 reply)

Living the dream. If I were in a better financial position I'd do the same

Cheebus@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1d

it ain’t much but it gets me by

MrNesser@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d

That's a good idea, think I'll start one soon.

Hey dude, wishing you the best! Hang in there and also consider getting some other help if things get tough.

And nice choice on the fishing farm, I just love the layout for that one.

Waggles@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2d (1 reply)

Thanks for your kindness. I remembered not liking the layout originally, but now that you can move the greenhouse I think it's gonna be a fun one

gedfromgont@piefed.ca · 2 pts · 2d

I didn't even know you can move it! But haven't played the game for more than a year either...
