While the sheer number and absurd locations of the overtakes were enjoyable, this GP really hammered home how the current rule set forces a sorting of the field according to the capabilities of the cars, with very little contribution of the drivers. P2 for ANT was basically a forgegone conclusion. Over at /r/f.. there were talks about how that was a generational drive by ANT, I don't share that sentiment. It was impressive seeing him outdriving RUS so thoroughly, but he wasn't tested beyond that. Also, hats off to the field for mostly keeping it clean with all those close encounters.

Of course outcome in motorsports is decided by who has the better car. The engineering effort is part of the allure of motorsports, even in spec series.
We'd be into competitive barefoot running if we only wanted the ability of the athlete and none of the equipment (shoes, engines, aero,...) to matter.

No, the claim was that this rule set somehow made the car relevant. That's just wrong. It always was.
