That's hard to defend if there's evidence. Very often they get away with it. But maybe they could do some good. Maybe they could be used to test drugs that are currently not yet at human testing levels. Instead of wasting their lives, something good could come out. How about testing various pills like this... Each person gets 3 mistery pills every week. Two are placebos. If they choose right, they get another 7 days. If they choose the drug, then the effect would be clear.
