Damaging winds and heavy rains from Hurricane Lowell pelted Hawaii’s western islands Tuesday, knocking out power to thousands and ripping up stretches of beachside roads.
Along the Southern California coast, dangerous surf conditions kicked up by the remnants of Hurricane Marie were expected to stick around for several days.

Yeah it was bad. No iniki bad. But still bad. Niihau got smacked hard and some bad damage and flooding on Kauai, but this was another near miss just relative to population.
Real concern would have been if the track was another hundred or so miles south. West side Oahu jas maybe 50k people on it, and it's not at all prepared for a hurricane. One road in, one road out, 11 miles.
