This is the tippy top of the Portland Weather Machine! At noon each day, the sound of horns heralds the next day’s weather, and a brass icon pops out of the top of the machine, where it remains until the next day. Tomorrow’s weather is sunny! There’s also a heron for light rain, and a dragon for heavy rain. There’s also a column of lights alongside the machine to indicate temperature, but that’s outside the artistic scope of my intentions.

Used to be, in the days before cell phones, newspapers, arthritic elbows, and guessing blindly, Portlanders would gather hundreds of thousands at a time to see the weather for the next day, and shouts of “yo the weather is dragon, tell everybody!” were commonplace. The machine doesn’t enjoy such popularity anymore, but it still operates every day and is fun to see, and it’s more accurate than guessing blindly and the newspaper, but not as much as phones and modern-day hunches.
