Perhaps most of this is well known to others, but I hadn't thought about how vulnerable so many weeds are right before winter sets in.

You can also attack perennials with herbicides or organic weed-killing chemicals. In late summer and early fall they begin moving carbohydrates down into their root systems for winter storage. If you spray those plants during that period, they will naturally carry those chemicals deep into their root networks. That is much more effective at killing roots than applying weed killer in the spring.

I've been meaning to do this to Japanese Knotweed at my neighbor's fence, if not elsewhere in the neighborhood.

I have an over grown bed, about 600 ft^2/55m^2, that I was planning on tackling before the first freeze. It's such an overwhelming project, though. It's not exactly weeds so much as overly dense planting and overdue pruning. The main reason for doing it before the first freeze is to help differentiate what I want to keep or not.
