Trying a few things. Two socks at a time. Using a center pull and outer pull yarn from my new yarn ball holder.
I'm at the point where I need to pick a heal. I am going to go with a contrasting heel color to avoid yarn chicken. I do not want to cut the yarn to add a secondary color. But I'm having trouble finding a heel that isn't going to have me pulling my hair. These are size 1.75 mm (US 00) needles and picking up such tiny stitches invokes Cthulhu madness disorder.
So I'm thinking I'll just go with an afterthought heel. But also ribbed so it's more conforming than normal? But why can't I find a single example of a ribbed afterthought heel? Is there some rule against ribbing the back part of an afterthought heel but not the ball of the foot portion? Do I need to knit a sample to see what goes wrong?
Is there a better heel for contrast color cuff down heels that doesn't involve picking up stitches or cutting the main yarn?

I cannot help with your sock heel conundrum, but I just wanted to say I love your yarn ball holder. I'm in the midst of knitting socks two at a time from one ball, and the tangle is driving me mad. But I don't think I can retrofit your solution. Damn. Next time...

I wanted a yarn bowl thing but better for socks. I wanted to minimize yarn vomit while also getting the option to pull from both ends. This was my rough draft.
You could do one with ribbing and same size openings on both sides so the openings are big enough to pass a work in process through. My concern is that it won't be tight enough as the ball shrinks to minimize that yarn vomit issue. That's why I tapered one end so much. I suppose you could do a drawstring a few rows from one end to sinch it. That would allow for passing a WIP through but also keep the ball contained.
