Oregon tried to change how future teachers learn to teach reading. Will it pay off?

Save you a click; They're finally teaching phonics again. Since humans take time to learn things and grow and show results it will be a decade or two before the good news can be delivered.

My comment: Phonics actually works, instead of the bullshit techniques that ensured illiteracy for the last few decades.Phonics fails some, but any teaching method does, but rather than offer alternatives to that minority, the entire system was built on hoping and wishing and assuming kids would somehow learn these concepts magically from someone else.

Oregon's primary educational attainment, literacy and highschool graduation rates are now among the nations worst, so the reversion to proven methods likely guarantees better results. Widespread illiteracy didn't exist in Oregon before the state education board(paired with other damaging screen influences) exacerbated them at a structural level.
