Thrusting off the tachiai between Hiradoumi and Takerufuji, who gets taken to the edge but manages to pivot away from an attack which sends Hira marching out.
Oshoma opens by shouldering Roga to the side, stands him up with a nodowa, then slaps him down. Textbook sumo and Roga never had a chance here.
Fujinokawa meets Yoshinofuji's drive with an underarm right throw attempt that pivots Yoshi to the tawara, and when Yoshi answers by clamping down on the arm and going for a throw of his own Fuji recovers balancing on one foot and drives Yoshi over the edge. Short match but great work here on both sides.
Coming off his third tourney yusho win, Aonishiki finds his inside left and eventually uses it for some throw attempts and hip positioning to walk Kotoeiho over the straw.
Takayasu makes a halfway decent showing against Kotozakura but the ozeki eventually finds a belt grip and takes Papa across the ring and out.
Some thrusts back and forth but Kirishima finds a deep overhand grip against Kotoshoho and slaps him down to the dirt.
Onosato comes in strong against Daieisho but decides to go for a slap down that loses him a lot of ground. He works back to the center and tries another slap down that works but also puts him on the edge and he leaps back over the ropes as Daiei crashes to the ground.
Hoshoryu is out for injury this basho. With one yokozuna it's anyone's game.

This is my fave match-up in all of sumo!
I was cheering for Yoshinofuji, but Fujinokawa did some amazing balance work here
Really awesome of him to make sure Kotoeiho didn't fall into the first row
And the winner for backwards high-jump in a sumo match is...
also of note: in Atamifuji vs Gonoyama, the "stand off" where Gonoyama doesn't let Atamifuji use his "zombie arms" technique at the start.
